Deadline Extended for Non-Filers Only

Economic Impact Payments Registration Deadline for Non-Filers Extended to November 21, 2020

Yes. We are writing about Economic Impact Payments…again. But we think it is important for everyone who qualifies to take advantage of this benefit designed to relieve some of the economic impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important for you, your parents, grandparents, or other family members who may typically be non-filers to be aware of this extension to register for the payment before time runs out.

If you missed the October 15 deadline and thought you had missed your opportunity, you now have until November 21, 2020.

This Extension Applies to Non-Filers Only

This extension into November is solely for those who have not received their Economic Impact Payment (EIP) and who do not normally file a tax return. If you requested an extension to file your 2019 tax return, that deadline remained October 15 and has, therefore, passed.

Most eligible U.S. taxpayers automatically received their Economic Impact Payment. Others who do not have a filing obligation used the Non-Filers tool to register with the IRS to get up to $1,200. Typically, this includes people who receive little or no income.

To support the EIP initiative and offer some economic relief caused by the Coronavirus, partner groups supported the IRS in helping to translate the information and resources on Economic Impact Payments and making it available in 35 languages. In addition, almost 9 million letters were mailed in September to non-filers who may be eligible for the $1,200 EIP.

How to Register

Taxpayers who typically do not file a tax return and have not received an Economic Impact Payment are encouraged to register as quickly as possible using the Non-Filers: Enter Info Here tool on IRS.gov. The tool will not be available after November 21, 2020.

The Non-Filers tool is designed for people with incomes typically below $24,000 for married couples and $12,000 for singles who cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else. This includes couples and individuals who are experiencing homelessness.

Using the Non-Filers tool can speed up the arrival of your payment by choosing to receive it by direct deposit. If you do not choose this option, you will get your check by mail. Beginning two weeks after you register, you can track the status of your payment using the Get My Payment tool also available on IRS.gov. This tool is available only on IRS.gov, so be wary of any other website claiming to offer this service.

A Final Note

Some of those who qualify may not have Internet access or might be intimidated by trying to register online. If that’s the case, we urge you to offer assistance to a family member in getting them registered. There likely will not be another extension. The Non-Filers tool will not be available after November 21, 2020.

Stay safe. Stay well. Stay home.
